New Cumberland Army Depot is located in Fairview, Pennsylvania, just outside of Harrisburg at 40°12′34″N 76°50′15″W. The 851-acre (1.32 sq mi) site is directly southeast of the Capital City Airport and south of Riverview Golf Club. The southern border is marked by Interstate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike). The base is also filled by the Susquehanna River along its entire eastern and northern sides. To its west the facility borders a small residential community. The Susquehanna River Valley of South-central Pennsylvania is a forested area just outside the major metropolitan area of Harrisburg. The climate of the area is classified as humid continental and experiences hot humid summers and mild cold winters.

The Army's Quartermaster Department built a depot in New Cumberland in 1918 because of its strategic location on the Susquehanna River. The depot was designated the Marsh Run Storage Depot. During the Vietnam War the Marsh Run Storage Depot received aircraft maintenance shops and hangars for US Army helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, and in 1962 the facility was renamed the New Cumberland Army Depot. During this period the New Cumberland Army Depot's primary focus was on the repair and overhaul of twin-rotor CH-47 Chinook helicopters, particularly the replacement of worn rotor blades. New Cumberland Army Depot supplies military and commercial repair parts, textiles and clothing, medical supplies and electronic components to military units and customers worldwide.
