To be honest, we hadn't given much thought to visiting before our road trip (we tend to focus more on South Florida), but thankfully that changed. We were very wrong; the north is amazing and there are so many gems that we don't hear about (from across the pond).

Jacksonville River Walks has a stack of trails that span both sides of the St. River. Johns. This means you will love it as you can walk on a city trail while exploring much of the city.

Just make sure to keep your eyes focused on the water. If you're lucky, you might even see some dolphins.

Afterwards, head to Treaty Oak Park to see one of the city's most famous southern live oaks. It is said to be over 250 years old!

The former home of Zephaniah Kingsley, Kingsley Plantation is located in the middle of Fort George Island State Park.

Hiding a dark side of history, Kingsley Plantation is a former plantation where a great deal of exploitation of enslaved people took place. Today, you can learn more about this terrible period of forced labor. This is very sad to read, but something that should never be forgotten.

Best Of The Beach On A Budget In Jacksonville, Florida

Alternatively, drive 30 minutes from Jacksonville and explore Ponte Vedra Beach, which is an absolutely stunning stretch of white sand dreams! If you want to stay a few nights at the beach, check out the Ponte Vedra Inn. It's so dreamy and right by the beach.

One of the most unique places in North Florida, Big Talbot Islands is one of the best things to do in Jacksonville if you want a day outdoors.

There are plenty of tidal creeks where you can relax and slide between the islands. Just make sure you rent your gear before you visit, especially during the high season of the year. We used Kayak Amelia and they are amazing.

Big Talbot Island State Park is a beach in Sandy State Park where marshes, wetlands, bike paths and secret beaches can be found. Its main highlights are Blackrock Beach and Boneyard Beach. You can also go hiking and kayaking here.

Best Things To Do In Jacksonville, Florida

For a paved hike, head to the 3-mile Timucuan Trail. Walking through the park's magnificent scenery, it's the kind of place that's breathtaking, even on a hot day. You see, much of the trail is shaded by the large canopy of trees, which makes it much cooler in the summer.

Although technically not within the city limits, Amelia Island is one of the best things to do in Jacksonville when you want to get away from the streets.

With the most incredible beaches, it's the perfect day trip to relax and enjoy the surf. Alternatively, if you feel like it, you can try joining a hiking trail, go horse riding or check out the cozy museum.

Best of all, getting to Amelia Island is no surprise! Connected to mainland Florida via the 200 freeway, you can drive directly to the island.

Founded in 1958, the Cummer Museum is one of the best things to do in Jacksonville, regardless of the weather!

With over 5,000 works by various artists and a history spanning centuries, the art museum is an absolutely fantastic place to visit for a few hours. Although in reality you would need days to see everything.

The Florida Theater is nearly 100 years old and something of a Jacksonville institution. It's the perfect place to catch a show, comedy or play while exploring the city.
